PREVENT Training Model

The PREVENT curriculum is built around several core concepts.

Small Group Learning: Knowledge and skills are best learned in small groups with plenty of interactive exercises and practical application.PREVENT trainings comprised of approximately 60 participants (made up of teams) with large-group discussion and multiple break-out sessions.

Action Learning: Adult learners learn by applying their new skills to real situations. In PREVENT trainings, you (and your teams) will begin to create your own prevention plans that help you to begin the program planning process. Follow up work with coaches will allow you to continue to refine your plan.

Building Teams: If organizations working on violence prevention are to develop and grow, we must do more than train individual managers. That's why you are encouraged to bring a team of three to four people from participating organizations to the PREVENT trainings. A team might consist of 3-4 members including representatives from a statewide coalition, local youth program, faith organization, and a local victim services organization.

Create Networks: Learning will continue beyond training if you strengthen your professional networks. PREVENT trainings will help you build relationships with professionals across your region, from a variety of people in the violence prevention arena.

Provide Context: Skills must be usable as soon as you return to the work setting. Many of the case studies and small-group exercises will require you to learn and apply new knowledge across the spectrum of violence prevention.
