Part 1: Moving Upstream: The Story of Prevention

Introduction

The first presentation in Module 1, Moving Upstream: The Story of Prevention, introduces you to the theory of prevention. In this presentation, you will learn about the "Upstream" analogy, prevention and intervention strategies, and how prevention broadens the work of those working with the victims and perpetrators of violence.

Competencies addressed:

  • Ability to describe and explain injury and/or violence as a major social and health problem.
    • Explain how injury and/or violence is preventable
    • Explain the continuum of injury and violence prevention from primary prevention to acute care and rehabilitation

Learning objectives:

  • Describe what it means to "move upstream" and prevent violence from initially occurring
  • Describe prevention and intervention strategies
  • Define risk and protective factors
