| PREVENT Guidelines for Effective Participation We are excited about the diversity of participants in our training-- teams and individuals all dedicated to the prevention of some form of violence. We believe that if we can engage the talents of everyone in the group, both during and after the training, we can move from "training for its own sake" to learning that informs action. As part of PREVENT training, you will develop an action plan for how you want to continue to learn and apply knowledge and skills. We are coming together during this training to focus on the prevention of violence before first time perpetration or victimization. This does not imply that other forms of prevention (e.g. to prevent re-victimization) or services to assist victims are not important. We find inspiration in the words of Nelson Mandela; "We must address the roots of violence. Only then will we transform the past century's legacy from a crushing burden into a cautionary lesson." (World report on violence and health, 2002) Here are the guidelines we will use to make the most of this training opportunity and to learn from each other: Appreciate diverse experience and ideas Acknowledge other ports of view; recognize common goals Focus on interests and ideas not on a position or person Do self-critiques |
