PREVENT Regional Workshops: Moving Toward Violence Prevention

The PREVENT Program will kick-off its regional workshops "Moving Towards Violence Prevention" in Chapel Hill, NC on September 7-9, 2004. There will be two other opportunities to attend this workshop in 2004 in Sacramento, CA on September 15-17, 2004 and Columbus, OH on September 22-24, 2004. (Please note: these workshops will be offered each year and locations will change in future years. )

This two-day workshop will focus on defining and understanding the concept of primary prevention of violence as well as introducing strategic program planning processes. All who work in the area of violence prevention, across the spectrum of violence (domestic violence, sexual assault, youth violence, child maltreatment, suicide prevention, etc.), will benefit from this workshop and are encouraged to apply.

This is the beginning of multiple learning opportunities that focus on preventing violence before it happens. The intensive 6-month PREVENT Institute "Making Violence Prevention Happen." For more information on the institute, click here. Distance education resources will also be available for those who are unable to travel to regional workshops and the institute.

If you are interested in a regional workshop, fill out the online application (click here). Be sure to do so by the deadline-- JULY 31, 2004. Unfortunately, there are only 60 spaces, with a limited number of seats for each type of CDC grantee, in each location so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible. (It is not necessary to register for the workshop closest to you. You may apply for any of the workshops. Just be sure to check ONE choice on the application form.)

There will be a short assignment to complete prior to the workshop so that attendees have a similar knowledge base and the workshop will be followed with activities that focus on applying the skills learned to a prevention project of your choice. Since partnerships are fundamental to the success of community-based programs, multi-organizational teams are encouraged to apply. (For example a team might consist of 3-4 members including representatives from a statewide coalition, local youth program, faith organization, and a local victim services organization.) Please indicate on the application form, the names of other team members who will be applying. A team may include a maximum of four member.

We realize that the locations are not convenient for everyone who may benefit from this workshop so a limited number of travel stipends will be available to help defer the cost. Please indicate on the application if you would like to be considered for a travel stipend. If so, we will forward a travel stipend request form to you.

Your participation in PREVENT training (tuition, materials and room & board) is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  This training is available to violence prevention practitioners and their partners from the United States and US Territories.

We are thrilled to be able to offer this workshop opportunity and look forward to seeing you at one of the regional locations in the future.|
